Paris Sciences & Lettres university debuts in world rankings
The first international ranking for Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL) in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings has produced an impressive result – the highest ranking of any French institution and eighth best in Europe. Overall it was 38th, placing it among the world’s top 50 universities.

A hub of academic research institutions

The University in Paris brings together some of France's most prestigious academic and research institutions in a broad range of disciplines from engineering, chemistry and oncology to economics, management, the humanities and the performing arts. From its foundation just seven years ago, it has aimed to establish itself as one of the world’s top research universities. This ranking is a huge step towards its goal. The rankings achievement is a strong reflection of its progress since the results are based on peer recognition. An extensive global opinion survey of leading academics stretching across 137 countries assessed the excellence of research and teaching. The survey was conducted between January and March this year and received a total of 10,566 responses.

Strength in numbers

PSL’s ranking shows that consolidating institutions to work together within a large university is paying off. For example, the École normale supérieure ranked individually in the 61 to 70 bracket, and now, as a member institution of PSL, finds itself among the top 40.“France has been a relative underperformer in this list in recent years, but PSL’s success reveals the collective prestige of many of the leading institutions in Paris”, affirmed Phil Baty, publisher of the Times Higher Education Ranking.
