OVERALL RISK RATINGLOWAustralia’s current national terrorism threat level is ’probable’ and the country has seen some high profile incidents recently; among them the hostage crisis in a popular café in Sydney and the New South Wales murder of a civilian police employee.Perpetrators are often self-radicalised and loosely affiliated to the Islamic State. Australia’s involvement in the international coalition against IS may prompt further attacks.Violent crime is low but does occur, while non-violent crime is common in crowded areas. Generally, crime levels are similar to those of the western world.
