France
OVERALL RISK RATING:
LOWTerrorist attacks in Paris and Nice have dominated the global media and there is still a high threat from Islamist terrorist groups in France, where a national state of emergency has been extended until 15 July 2017.
Crime rate
The crime rate is low, with petty theft and pickpocketing the most common problems.
Medical facilities
Medical care is excellent, particularly in major cities. Even in small towns there will generally be a GP, while mid-sized towns often have a hospital, or Centre Hospitalier (CH), with an A&E department (Urgences) from which patients can be referred elsewhere if necessary.
Watch out for avalanches in mountainous regions, and forest fires in summer months, especially on the south coast. Altitude sickness can also be a problem above 2,500 metres.
Vaccinations
Recommended vaccinations include tetanus, bat rabies and tick-borne encephalitis.
