According to this year’s Independent School Council (ISC) Census, the number of boarding pupils has fallen by 1.4%. However, according to Christian Heinrich, Chairman of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA), numbers are “stable” and there is evidence that the British boarding school experience is ever more popular internationally.

London could face school places shortage of 118,000

The shortfall of primary and secondary school places across the capital is set to rise sharply to more than 118,000 by 2016/17, London Councils has warned.

Latest analysis by London Councils, which represents local authorities in London, of data from the Department for Education (DfE) shows the demand for permanent school places in the capital will increase by almost a third in a single academic year from 90,000 in 2015/16.

The pressure is currently most acute in primary schools, but, as pupils get older, they will need increasing numbers of secondary school places.

Technical baccalaureate: alternative post-16 qualification announced

The government has announced an alternative to the traditional A-level this week. A new vocational performance measure called the technical baccalaureate, theTech Bacc, will mark achievement by young people aged 16 to 19 and will, the government claims, ensure they have the technical ability that employers want.
