China.jpgChina’s continued economic growth is bringing a new focus on domestic relocation – and with it fresh challenges for HR and talent-management professionals on the ground, as Fiona Murchie found out when she attended a lively and informative session at the Worldwide ERC Global Workforce Summit in Shanghai.

My enduring memory of Shanghai was the view of the river from my hotel room, with the constant flow of barges and cargo ships carrying building materials and containers throughout the day and night.

This is a growth city, a place of manufacture, commerce and retail. It is fast-paced, focused and energetic, from the neon lights to the designer shopping outlets, from the skyline of tower cranes and new office blocks to the streams of office workers hitting the streets and the metro at the end of the day.

businessMaking the most of the new generation of globally mobile employees, or ‘Millennials’, is essential for multinational companies going for global growth. It is always interesting to hear what is at the forefront of the minds of people operating in a specific geographical region.

At Worldwide ERC’s APAC summit, a panel consisting of Kate McFarlin, director of HR, China, for GHF Group, based in Shanghai, Greg Morley, vice-president, HR Asia Pacific, for Hasbro, based in Hong Kong, Mike Piker, partner, Mercer, based in Shanghai, and Cartus’s Matthew Spinolo, chairman of the Worldwide ERC board, shared their views with Peggy Smith, president and CEO of Worldwide ERC.
