New Delhi: A rough guide

New Delhi is the capital of India and the destination of 11 per cent of expatriate assignees. It has a population of 12.8 million and the headquarters of all government ministries and foreign embassies are located here. Geographically, New Delhi is in the north of India, and the city is spacious and open, but easy to get around. The main languages spoken are Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu. English is widely spoken, but knowing a little Hindi goes a long way.

Delhi’s can experience quite extreme weather. During the summer months (May, June and July), temperatures can hit 48°c. Hot days are often accompanied by dust storms. Humidity is generally low – except in July, August and September’s monsoon season. The dry heat means most activities take place indoors. In winter, the temperature can drop to 6-12°c.
