India: The new frontier
Setting realistic expectations is key to successful relocation. While India has so much to offer in terms of culture, a dynamic business life and a good standard of living, expatriates may find that the quality of housing, public sanitation and medical facilities below what they may be used to.
Housing: Suitable housing can be hard to find and landlords in some areas can be demanding. Hire a homefinding specialist to help identify the best locations as well as negotiate on price. Due to heat and dust it is generally advisable to search out homes with good ventilation, high ceilings and large windows with protection from sunlight.
Telecommunications and banking: India has a secure financial infrastructure. Most cities offer reliable landline, mobile telephone and internet connectivity due to India’s large technological service sector.
Public sanitation: Take precautions when eating and drinking local fare. Bottled water – check the seals – and boiled water are safest. Avoid fresh fruit and vegetables - as these may be unwashed.
Health concerns: Private medical care is excellent in urban centres, but not so in rural areas. Arrange sufficient insurance cover, including for medical evacuation.
Driving and transport: Most expatriates have a car and driver.
Petty crime: Like any metropolitan area, theft and petty crime are increasing –use common sense tactics.
Political tensions and terrorism: India is a relatively safe country. All foreign workers should register with their embassy and observe travel advisories issued by the Indian and home governments.
