Getting the career you want: Workfest 2014

Geared towards “getting the career you want”, the second annual work and women event hosted by UK online forum Mumsnet brought together over 200 women looking for career inspiration with business leaders and entrepreneurs in a fascinating day of discussion and practical insights.

Framing the day’s workshops, seminars, career clinics and conversations, the keynote panel discussion – chaired by political commentator Gaby Hinsliff and featuring Mumsnet founder and CEO Justine Roberts, Sara Bennison, marketing director at Barclays, Shami Chakrabati, director of Liberty, the human rights campaigning organisation, Sharry Crammond, group marketing and strategy director at Tesco, and Charlotte Ross, deputy editor of the London Evening Standard – asked “How do you do it all?”

Sharing their respective experiences, including how to manage the impact of overseas secondment and frequent business trips, the panelists concluded that having a good boss, setting your own boundaries around what you will and won’t do, like working weekends, and being brilliant at one thing rather than trying to do everything were among the foundations for success.

“If you say ‘no’ to certain things, then the things that you do, you have to do brilliantly,” observed Sharry Crammond. “So I think everyone has to think what is going to be their thing; what can I do brilliantly and be famous for in the organisation?”
