Choosing the right school for their child is top of the list for most relocating families. Getting it wrong can be a major factor in assignment failure and therefore doing your research is vital. School Open Days are normally an important part of the decision-making process, allowing families to take a tour of the school, meet pupils and staff and to hear from the head teacher, providing an important insight into the school’s ethos and culture.In an ideal world, many schools advise families to make applications one complete academic year in advance of entry but clearly families on a relocation move do not always have the luxury of time and will be looking at securing a school place out of term time.

Applying for schools

If moving to a relocation hotspot, families may find tough competition for places and, in some cases, a lack of availability at their school of choice which can lead to anxiety. However, it is still worth getting your child onto the waiting list as soon as possible as families at International schools move at unusual times of the year which may mean that the place you’re looking for becomes available sooner than you think, with your child top of the list.

It is always best to visit prospective schools. A school may look ideal on their website but visiting it in person you may feel that it is not a good fit for your child yet another school that you hadn’t necessarily considered is. See our list of Open Days below to find out when top schools around the world are opening their doors.For families needing to move quickly, it is worth noting when schools are in session and when they are on holiday. State-school offices will most likely be closed during holiday periods – which is a long six weeks in the summer – and even independent and international schools usually have a couple of weeks out of the office. While a school should be willing to invite parents for a tour at any time of the year, over the summer and during exam season you are less likely to get a true impression of school life.We are aware of a few international schools with last minute places still available and will be adding more as we are notified.
