The Primary Years Program (IB PYP)At KIS, students from Early Years to Grade 5 follow the Primary Years Programme, and all teachers are specifically trained for this age group.Student can start at KIS when they are 3 years. We welcome young students to our Early Years Centre, where they learn through play in a caring environment that encourages their independence, stimulates the children to ask questions, and makes learning fun!The PYP is designed to help children understand their role in an interconnected world where knowledge is constantly developing. The PYP helps students connect what they are learning to the world around them, and encourages them to understand the way different areas of knowledge relate to one another. The PYP also prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. Students approach all areas of learning within a framework of six themes. The themes have global significance and are relevant, allowing all students to identify with them regardless of geographical location. The themes are transdisciplinary, which means that they cross different subjects, helping students understand how subjects connect in the real world.

The programme teaches more than just knowledge. Students develop concepts, skills and attitudes as well. This helps students to always learn, and be successful both in and out of the classroom. After passing through the programme, students will have strong foundations as inquirers who are focused not only in the classroom but can also apply their knowledge to the world outside. The Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)The IB Middle Years Programme (For 11 to 16 year-olds), is a natural progression from the IB PYP and the ideal precursor to the IB Diploma Programme. The MYP again encourages students to understand concepts and apply knowledge in both classroom and real world environments.Academically challenging, the MYP supports students in becoming critical and reflective thinkers. The programme consists of eight subject groups (first language, second language, humanities, technology, mathematics, arts, sciences, and physical education). The subjects are integrated through five “areas of interaction” that prompt students to establish connections between subjects. This links their learning to real world and global issues, and students are then required to reflect and act on their learning. After passing through the MYP, students are equipped emotionally and academically to become responsible citizens of the community on local, national and international levels.

The Diploma Programme (IB DP)The IB Diploma (DP), for students aged 16 to 18 or 19, provides students with the skills for continuing education to university level. Throughout the world it is a well-known, widely accepted university-entrance qualification. Many universities prefer applications from students with an IB Diploma and they often give credits towards first year subjects.Designed to be both academically challenging while also balanced and reflective, the DP is valuable in training students to be critical-thinkers with a sense of international-mindedness. Taught over two years, DP students study six courses at higher or standard level. Courses cover two languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics, which ensures a broad distribution of learning and skills, with an additional course chosen from the arts group or from the main topics. The DP also stipulates three core requirements of an extended essay, theory of knowledge and CAS (creativity, action, and service) which generally take place outside of the classroom environment. The additional components broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding in a range of different situations. The extended essay is a 4,000 word essay on a topic chosen by the student. Theory of knowledge encourages students to question and validate the nature of knowledge. CAS requires students to actively learn from experiences outside the classroom, such as sports or volunteer work. The DP prepares students to choose their career paths through an environment that encourages adult attitudes. To assist in the transition to the outside world KIS faculty includes a full time Student Counselor plus a University Coordinator.
