Co-teaching and Bilingualism

The school employs a unique model of “co-teaching” from ECE to the end of Primary. Lessons are co-taught by one English- and one Chinese-speaking teacher, developing children’s bilingualism and enhancing their knowledge of Chinese culture. Reflecting this model, the school is represented by two co-principals – one Chinese and one Western.

21st Century Learning

Recently the school has started to radically remodel its classrooms to accommodate the evolving values and methodologies of 21st Century learning. In ECE and Primary, traditional classrooms with walls and doors have given way to open plan, flexible, multi-year group “Learning Communities”. Designed by leading educational space architects Fielding Nair International, these innovative Learning Communities are designed to facilitate interactive learning, develop a wide variety of soft skills, achieve better results, and support the school’s unique model of Chinese/English co-teaching.

Raising Global Citizens

In addition to academics, YCIS Beijing has a unique Character Education Programme dedicated to the development of students’ moral compasses. Through teaching, charity work and engaging with the local community, the school encourages its students to become global citizens of character and integrity who will make a positive difference in our world.

Early Childhood Education

The YCIS Beijing experience begins with the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Programme, where they provide a nurturing environment for children aged 2-5. Children are at the heart of the early childhood programme, experiencing the joy of learning through a holistic and play-based process that encourages discovery. The open-plan ECE Learning Community enables interaction and play between age groups, supervised by Chinese and English teachers. Lessons in ECE are also co-taught, ensuring students thrive in a wholly bilingual learning environment.

Primary School

Students transitioning to YCIS Beijing’s Primary School will find a place brimming with energy and life. Students are filled with an evident enjoyment of learning and are provided with a wealth of opportunities to develop academically and socially. The Primary curriculum combines an academically strong bilingual education with an extensive music, arts and sports programme. In particular, daily violin lessons for students between years 1-5 are part of the core curriculum, instilling both a love of music and increasing overall brain function in these formative years.

Secondary School

Students at YCIS Beijing Secondary School arrive into a truly international, multicultural and bilingual environment. Linguistic skills in English and Chinese are sharpened, and students develop a deep understanding of and respect for cultural diversity and global awareness. The secondary curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England. In Years 10-11, students transition to the IGCSE programme which in turn prepares them for the academically rigorous and internationally recognised IB Diploma Programme in Years 12-13.

YCIS Beijing Secondary School incorporates co-curricular activities and enrichment opportunities to inspire students beyond the classroom and develop their sense of social responsibility. Students are actively involved with the school’s charitable foundation Seeds of Hope, adventures such as the World Classroom and Experiencing China excursions, music, art, drama and more.

Outstanding Contribution to Charity

In the 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility awards, the British and American Chambers of Commerce awarded YCIS Beijing for its Outstanding Contribution to Charity. This award was in recognition of the school’s charitable foundation Seeds of Hope – initially founded to help school children following the Sichuan Earthquake, and now spreading further afield. Staff, students and parents alike contribute towards the organisation of frequent fundraising events in the name of this charitable foundation that sits at the heart of the school.
