At Seisen we are passionate about international education to which we bring our commitment to Love in Action.

Our belief is that international education helps to form caring young people and critical thinkers who can contribute to creating a better and more peaceful world.

Our faculty members love their fields of expertise and they love young people. It is our conviction that every student has a unique potential that they can achieve with our care and guidance.

Seisen offers an educational program that prepares “today’s students for tomorrow’s world”. Our program spans preschool, elementary and high school years, K-12, and focuses on very high academic standards as well as social, physical, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual development.

The International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) offers students in High School a Diploma that gives them a university entry credential for colleges worldwide.

Seisen is a community made up of faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni, enriched by over 60 different nationalities, who all work together for the good of every student.

In 1962, a kindergarten operated by the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was relocated from Yoyogi to Gotanda where it thrived. Plans for a first grade began. In September of the same year, the hope of the Handmaids and parents was realized as seven girls started first grade. With the approval of the Japanese Ministry of Education and the leadership of the first principal, Sister Rosina Gorini, classes at Seisen International School commenced.

The vision of a school that meets the needs of foreign residents began to take shape. Taking over as principal in 1964, Sister Carmen Linares began the Montessori program and had third graders as the school's "seniors". By September of 1971, the next principal, Sister Sagrario Nunez, had students from grades K-10 in her care. While the Gotanda building was overflowing, construction of a building at the current site in Yoga was underway. In 1972, classes in Yoga began. In 1973, Sister Asuncion Lecubarri took charge of students from kindergarten to grade 12. In June of 1974, she awarded diplomas to 18 students, Seisen's first graduating class. Since then the school has grown to over 700 students from Kindergarten to grade 12.

At Seisen International School, a sense of family and community are core to our mission and guiding principles. We believe that we are all life long learners.

Our community thus forms a seamless, closely knit community who learn, work, play and pray together.

All members of the Seisen community support our driving spirit of “Learning to Love, and Loving to Learn”, we are committed to service and social justice, and to making a positive difference in the lives of others and in the environment.

As a community we have the courage to navigate new possibilities, skills and resources in a dynamic, ongoing learning experience.

In the Spirit of St. Raphaela, we have a vision of where we want to go as we move into the future together. We challenge the conventional social and cultural patterns of our time and empower our students as future leaders. We seek out and explore concepts, ideas and issues that have personal, local and global significance. We apply thinking skills critically and creatively to approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions. In so doing, we acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

As a community we have a keen sense of respect for ourselves and for others, and we take responsibility for the consequences of our own words and actions. We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity of the individual, and the groups and communities with whom we engage.
