International School of Luxembourg

We achieve this by providing an excellent education and empowering our students to engage in both academic and enriching extra-curricular programmes. Our students set high expectations for themselves, enjoy school and the community is constantly rewarded by their achievements.

ISL has earned its outstanding reputation through its students’ successes, its rigorous educational programme, its dedicated staff, its caring community and its engagement with global issues. With over 50 nationalities in our student body and more than 20 nationalities within our staff, friendship, international mindedness, diversity and inclusion are ways of life in our multicultural environment.

Our international curriculum develops student learning and understanding, inquiry and reflection, resilience and independence, always focused upon developing the whole child and tomorrow’s global citizens. Our students regularly participate in international festivals for music, theatre and debate and in a wide range of sporting and service learning activities.

We work in partnership with our parent community and are strongly supported by a proactive Board of Governors and dynamic Parent Community Group. We hope that by browsing our website you will see the many opportunities and challenges that we offer our students.

What makes ISL distinctive in Luxembourg?

Our vision for learning puts exploration and inquiry at the forefront, with students as active and engaged participants in the learning process; students working individually, in small groups and as whole classes on projects that encourage connectedness; discovering meaning and truly exploring different ways of learning. At ISL, students learn how to learn.

As a private international school, we follow a standards based curriculum. In order to best meet the needs of our international student population, the curricula of several national systems are researched and have formed the sound basis for the development of ISL’s independent standards and benchmarks. The school follows the IGCSE programme in Grades 9 and 10 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme in Grades 11 and 12. The school is accredited by the Council of International School and Middle States Association and is an International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) World School. In an ever changing landscape of careers and opportunities, the best value we can provide our students is that they see themselves as life-long learners with the confidence to succeed as technologies, tools, and times evolve.

What is the value proposition ISL is offering to students?

At ISL, students have access to an approachable teaching body, personal and academic counsellors and resources, experts in higher education and careers counselling, excellent art, theatre and music faculty and a plethora of performance opportunities.

These features add tremendous support to student success. Health and safety is a priority. ISL maintains an infirmary and nursing staff, and the school contracts with a high quality security and catering service. Learning Support teachers provide services for students with mild learning differences to meet their diverse needs as they access the general curriculum. In addition, our students have access to a diverse range of sports and extra-curricular opportunities.

Ultimately, the biggest value we offer your children is their daily interaction with the people that engage, encourage, challenge, inspire, and support them throughout their time at ISL. Our qualified and experienced school leaders, caring support staff and excellent teaching faculty form a core staff that ensures the highest standards are maintained in the classroom and that the daily operation of the school is in compliance with best practices in education.

Teaching and Learning at ISL

The Lower School

The Lower School, with its state-of-the-art facilities, offers an integrated approach to learning, connected to the lives of our students, whatever their language or cultural backgrounds.

We promote a passion for thinking and learning among both students and faculty together with an increasing understanding of themselves and their world through critical inquiry, problem solving, discovery and reflection. Students are inspired to take initiative, be innovative and resilient, collaborate with others, all within a caring international environment.

Our inquiry-based academic programme emphasises mathematical, language and technology literacies and promotes curiosity in the sciences and social studies. The application of knowledge, skills and understanding are essential elements in each unit of learning, from Preschool to Grade 5. French, the creative and performing arts, together with physical exercise, health and wellness are developed with specialist teachers of the discipline, working collaboratively with the homeroom teachers. Students needing specific support in learning English as an additional language, academic support or extension are provided for through our student support services. Outdoor learning and an appreciation of the local and wider community are an important part of our students’ experience throughout the year.

There is a wide range of after school activities for students to develop their interests and  life-long skills, providing opportunities to work within a broad age-range in the Lower School and, in some cases, with Upper School partners. We believe that student inquiry and play are essential to their well-being, confidence, an understanding of themselves and others, and their place in the world.

The Upper School

The Upper School at ISL balances academic growth with social and personal development.

Through our holistic and rigorous programmes, we give our students the confidence to reach their potential, exceed their expectations and pursue their talents to become compassionate and responsible global citizens. We understand that students learn best in an environment where they feel safe and secure, able to take the initiative, try new activities, take risks and make mistakes.  As such, the learning environment is nurturing and respectful of learners and educators.

In the Middle School, our students have many opportunities to explore their interests, discover hidden talents and develop a greater awareness of the world around them. Teachers foster team building, risk taking, open mindedness, creativity and reflection with our students as they move into their teenage years.

Our High School students in Grades 9 and 10 follow the IGCSE programme in core subjects and then move on in Grades 11 and 12 to the High School Diploma, with 90% of our students also pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.  As a result of the diplomas on offer, ISL students are able to obtain admission to the world’s finest universities and colleges.

Beyond the classroom and at an early age, we encourage our students to learn the importance of developing a healthy ‘work-life’ balance. Sports, music, theatre, debate, Global Issues Network, of which ISL was a founding member, MUN, Mérite Jeunesse, the LAP programme, Student Council, Yearbook, Student Newspaper reporters, Community Service, are just some of the activities on offer.
