CIPD launches new HR basics hub

Small businesses can access a free, online site to help improve their people management capabilities, and so boost company performance and productivity.

Launched at the CIPD's Festival of Work in June, the new People Skills Hub builds on evidence suggesting companies with access to good-quality HR see improved workplace relations, productivity and positive financial outcomes. The resource recognises that most small business owners self-report that they have little knowledge or expertise in people management, and few resources to improve their capability beyond basic legal requirements. Based on the professional body for HR and people development's 12-month pilot programme, which provided HR support to small firms in Glasgow, Stoke and Hackney in East London, the free resource is now being launched online and nationally through Growth Hubs, Local Enterprise Partnerships and local chambers of commerce.

From compliance to Good Work

With studies suggesting good employment practices and healthy working environments are valued by prospective employees as well as support compliance with employment laws, the People Skills Hub offers a range of resources and tools to help companies develop people management skills. The Hub includes information across:
  • managing people essentials: Covering basic legal requirements, contracts, recruitment, absence, holidays and time off, family leave, redundancies, grievances and more
  • planning a people strategy: Covering team building, pay and benefits, learning and development, performance management, well-being and more.
  • getting support: Access to additional resources including podcasts, reports and online training opportunities.

A national approach to effective people management

Peter Cheese, chief executive of the CIPD, said: “Effective people management and development practices are essential to help businesses thrive and grow and improve the quality of jobs in the UK.“Our pilots showed that once owner managers understand the importance of people management they are more likely to invest in this area of their business.”
