Our Mission: Safe Passage Across Networks (SPAN) offers a home to anyone committed to healthy transitions and attachment security. We connect, equip and refresh transitions-care providers.
Safe Passage Across Networks (SPAN)
28 May 2025Since its inception in 2016,
Safe Passage Across Networks (SPAN) has offered “a home for anyone committed to healthy transitions and attachment security.” Together with you, we have started building a network that connects, equips, and refreshes transitions-care providers around the world. Thank you for being a part of us!
After a year of sabbatical from SPAN, I (Doug) have returned to renew my work with the SPAN community. I am deeply indebted to Mona Stuart for her outstanding service as Advisor in Residence during my time away, helping SPAN and all its crew hold true to our course.
As this northern hemisphere school year draws to a close, SPAN enters a new season, providing an opportunity to live out the very transition principles we champion. We celebrate our dedicated
Leadership Team - Executive Director Valérie Besanceney and Director of Training & Consulting Jane Barron alongside Aleka Bilan, Catalina Gardescu, Julia Love and Amy Shuflin - who have stewarded SPAN with vision and purpose. We are deeply grateful for their commitment which has made SPAN the recognized leader in positive transitions-care.
Now, an exciting new opportunity unfolds: Valérie and Jane will continue their work through the
Council of International Schools (CIS), bringing positive transitions-care to a wider and varied audience. Many of you are aware that SPAN has always enjoyed a close, collaborative relationship with CIS as Supporting Partners, fostering research at both organizations related to transitions-care and facilitating professional learning to develop leading practices in educational communities. We are encouraged that the impact of SPAN’s work will continue to grow through CIS’ excellent reputation and circles of influence. We wish “our” Valérie and Jane the greatest of success in their new roles.
Given the world’s current geopolitical state, SPAN’s mission is arguably more relevant than ever. We believe this is a moment to recenter our energies around two strengths we believe SPAN has to give the world: thought leadership and belonging. We continue to offer meaningful ideas and a home for those supporting others navigating transitions.
We invite you to keep walking this journey with us, holding onto the connections and insights that make this community so special.
With care and appreciation,
Doug Ota (SPAN Founder and Advisor) & Claudine Hakim (SPAN Board of Trustees Chair)
