National Work Life Week: 1-5 October 2018

With research showing people in the UK are working harder than ever for little additional benefit and are more stressed as a result, National Work Life Week could inspire welcome relief for employers and employees alike.

National Work Life Week is an awareness-raising initiative by the charity Working Families.Across the five days, employers will share how they support work life balance for their staff and promote wellbeing. To help inspire change towards better safeguarding employee wellbeing and productivity, we’ve pulled together a selection of features and insight from Relocate Global and our Think Women initiative, and will be updating our pages throughout the week.

Why is work-life balance important?

Positive work-life balance benefits everyone. This is why legislation protects every employee’s right to request flexible working – not just parents’ – and a government taskforce is evaluating the government’s proposal to make every job flexible from day one. Most people agree also that they work better when they are well-rested and able to meet their needs outside of the workplace. A recent HSBC Expat Explorer study also shows that good work-life balance is a key feature of the most appealing destinations. There are also 11 million working mothers and fathers in the UK, making up more than a third of the workforce, says Working Families. Often, how work is designed, organised and advertised stops people with caring responsibilities from reaching their potential. For nearly half of parents and carers, work affects their ability to spend time together as a family; and a third of parents say they feel burnt out all or most of the time.
