Ape research and Solar Lamps: your average school assembly!
Bavarian International School (BIS) students learnt about the pioneering work of Jane Goodall – the world renowned UN peace ambassador and ape researcher – in a recent assembly with visitors from the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI).

Studying chimpanzees

Jane Goodall and Lorenz Knauer
Documentary filmmaker Lorenz Knauer, president of the JGI, and his colleague Dr. Ulrike Beckmann, spoke of how little was known about chimpanzees when Ms Goodall arrived in Gombe Park, Tanzania in 1960 to study them. She made groundbreaking discoveries including that chimpanzees are able to use tools and, contrary to popular belief at the time, they were not vegetarian.

Jane's Journey

The children were shown excerpts from the documentary, “Jane’s Journey” – depicting the achievements of Ms Goodall – which was produced and filmed by Mr. Knauer.
As well as studying the work of Jane Goodall in their daily morning registration sessions, BIS students have been learning about JIG’s partnership with Villageboom – a social enterprise aiming to provide affordable solar lamps to people living in rural communities in the developing world. The assembly gave the students the opportunity to delve deeper and to ask questions about ape research and life in Tanzania.
