All pupils received their results electronically but many also came into school to celebrate with teachers and friends.
Seven girls achieved three or more A*s while there were exceptional individual results in a range of different subjects. There are also six girls who are Oxbridge bound after securing the grades needed to secure their places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities. Across the year group of 125 pupils, an impressive 57 per cent of exams were graded at A*-A with 83 per cent at A*-B.
Among those Cambridge bound is Head of Day Vivienne Howells, who will study Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge. Vivienne, who joined the School from a state primary in Year 7, achieved three A*s in English, Greek and Latin. She said: “I was so nervous I felt sick but it was fine.
“This school is such a special place, the teachers really encouraged me with everything. I have loved it so much, particularly being Head of Day and spending time with the Headmistress and seeing how the School works.”
Twins Florence and Alice Bolton will join Vivienne, Florence to study Anglo Saxon, Norse and Celtic at St John’s College and Alice to study Music at Emmanuel College. Between them, they have six A*s and an A, along with an additional two A*s in the EPQ. Florence and Alice joined Headington Rye Oxford for the Sixth Form, having previously been home educated.
Florence said: “I am feeling thrilled. It was a very nice surprise when I opened my results and I am so pleased we both got in.
“I have really enjoyed my time here – I loved home education too so I feel like I have had the best of both worlds. It’s been really nice being in small classes the last couple of years and being able to learn with others.
“I have made some lasting friendships and it has been such a welcoming place for me coming in for the first time.
“I am so happy to be able to do this course, it still feels unreal and it will be really nice to be in the same university as Alice so we can still see each other regularly.”
Alice said: “I am really happy and excited and it’s really nice to know I am definitely going.
“I’ve joined so many different clubs and done a lot of music here, as well as outside school – sometimes you don’t know how you’re going to fit it in but it has meant you’re not completely confined by academics and it fit in well with my course.
“I’m really grateful for the financial support the School has provided because we would have never been able to come to the School if we didn’t have the generous bursaries that we got. It’s meant we have had a very happy time the last two years.”
This year 14 girls will take up places on Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary and Allied Healthcare courses. Among them is Natascha Lloyd Wiliams, whose grades of A*AA are her passport to studying Medicine at Bristol.
Natascha, who joined Headington Rye in Year 7, said: “I am just over the moon to get into med school!
“The School has been amazing with the support I’ve received both academically and pastorally.
“I can’t believe in less than a month, I will be at uni doing Medicine – I am so happy the hard work has paid off.”
There were a range of impressive results in different subject areas. Every student taking Classics achieved an A or A*, while there were also spectacular results in the Arts, with all Textile Design pupils achieving A*-A and 80 per cent of those taking Fine Art or Photography recording an A or higher. In Chemistry, Economics, English, Geography, History, Maths, Psychology and Spanish, at least 80 per cent of pupils achieved A*-B, with a fantastic 74 per cent of those taking English achieving at least an A.
Cressida Gooch, outgoing Hockey Captain and prefect, was first into school and chose to open her results in the Sixth Form Centre rather than at home. She was delighted with her three As, securing her place to study Physics with Astrophysics at Nottingham. She is already gearing up for several weeks’ pre-season Hockey training with her new university.
She said: “I wanted to open the results in school – I have done all the hard work here, I sat the exams here – it just feels right.
“I love this school, it’s been hard to leave and that’s a recognition of how much I enjoyed it. I am elated with my results.”
Of the year group, three quarters received their first-choice university place. There were also fantastic results in BTEC qualifications, with three quarters of the cohort achieving a Distinction*.
Headmistress Mrs Caroline Jordan said: “As always, these fantastic results hide the tremendous amount of sheer hard work that has gone on behind the scenes from both students and staff.
“These girls started their A Level courses as Headington School and Rye St Antony pupils and they finish as the very first graduates of Headington Rye Oxford. They have welcomed each other, forged new friendships, demonstrated exceptional leadership and managed to produce incredible results alongside this.
“I congratulate each and every one of them and can’t wait to follow them as they proceed onto Higher Education and follow exciting career paths.”
Headington Rye Oxford is a vibrant day and boarding school for girls aged 11-18 and co-educational prep school for girls and boys aged 3-11.
