Global outrage follows Manchester terror attack

Worldwide condemnation has followed the suicide bomb attack at a pop concert in Manchester that left at least 22 people, including children, dead and dozens injured.

The aftermath of the attack was being keenly felt in Dublin on Tuesday, not least because Manchester is home to many Irish expatriates. A helpline was being manned in Dublin (+353 1 4082000) for any families or employers concerned about the fate of Irish citizens.Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan said he was horrified by the killings. “My thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and we stand by our nearest neighbour, the UK, especially due to the strong links between our country and the city of Manchester,” he said. The attack also served as a reminder to employers about their responsibilities over terror attacks towards staff assigned overseas, even to relatively safe places such as Europe and North America.A German study three years ago found terrorism was a source of intense stress for expats. The recommendations included a plan for ensuring employees did not panic by offering real, accurate and non-sensationalised information about the nature of any terrorist threat.Overseas firms with expat staff based in Manchester, as well as nations’ consulates in the UK, were offering assurances to families worried about staff working in the area, as world leaders expressed condolences to the victims and solidarity with the British.
