A fascinating new survey of parents has highlighted the most important deciding factors for families when choosing a new school.
A UK based teaching union has interviewed over a thousand parents about their preferences when making a decision about a new school for their child.
Unsurprisingly the location of the school or college was found to be top of the list of the most important factors for parents with two thirds of parents selecting location as the key reason for school selection.
Over half of the parents polled selected supportive staff and over two fifths selected the type of curriculum offered. Other factors in the top five were the results of the latest inspection report and a school’s reputation for dealing with bullying and bad behaviour.
The survey also found that the majority of parents looked online for further information and talked to parents of children at the schools or colleges when choosing where to send their child. However, there was found to be a lack of trust in government league tables and social networks amongst the parents. Only 12 per cent of parents claimed to check social networks for information and advice and 29 per cent checked the school’s league table position.
Parents were also asked about their expectations for their child’s education and the important issues that arose when discussing the outcomes expected from schools and colleges. The overriding issue for parents (almost nine in ten) emerged as the safety and security of their child within the education establishment.
Over three quarters identified that they enjoy their time and develop good character. Fewer parents identified making good friends, achieving good grades and building good career prospects.
