A World of Opportunities That Shapes a Lifetime of Memories

What are your best memories of school? More often than not, they are found in the scent of rain on the pitch before a final match, the echoes of laughter at camp, or the excited hum of a crowded theater before the curtain rises. For parents, choosing a school is about more than academics; it is about finding a place that offers abundant opportunities for their children and fosters cherished memories along the way.

At The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), the co-curricular program complements its holistic education by equipping students with the skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. As High School student Hsia J. (’27) reflects, “There are so many clubs, sports, and classes that you can join that I never even knew that you could be a part of. Adding to this, if it didn’t seem like enough, ISKL gives you the option to create your own club and do what you love. In doing this, there is so much support from teachers and staff here. Everyone wants what is best for you.”

A Journey Through the Years

In Elementary School, the co-curricular program is an integral part of the ISKL experience, inviting young learners to step beyond the classroom to discover the joy of a new hobby, the thrill of a team sport, or the spark of a new interest. By focusing on the whole child, the school nurtures that same sense of wonder that many parents remember from their own first steps into the wider world.

As students transition into Middle School (MS), the focus shifts toward developing agency and the future-ready skills needed for an evolving world. Every year, MS students eagerly anticipate Malaysia Week, the ultimate Middle School outdoor experience. Yun Zhe C. (’31) recalls this as his most memorable moment at ISKL: “My most memorable moments from ISKL were Malaysia Week in Langkawi. For the first time, I was away from my family for a whole week and stayed in the wild with my teammates. Throughout the 5-day activities, I learned to get along with people, helping and supporting each other as a team, taking on challenges that I never thought I could do, like abseiling and Skytrex.”By the time students reach High School (HS), they are empowered to lead clubs and initiatives aligned with their interests, competencies, and aspirations, in preparation for life beyond ISKL. Whether it is Vayden W. (’27) co-leading Computer Science clubs to teach peers how to code, or Amanda V. (‘26) launching "The Thrift Collective" from the ground up to combat fast fashion, students are encouraged to take on leadership positions, explore community needs, plan solutions, and take action.

Beyond the Classroom

Participation in co-curricular activities is a vital part of ISKL’s educational philosophy, and beyond the academic curriculum, students learn collaboration, camaraderie, and commitment through a variety of activities. These attributes are developed and practiced by students of every age on the track and trail, court and studio, and pitch and pool.ISKL students also compete in many local and regional competitions throughout the year, which allows them to connect with students from other schools. ISKL is a proud participating member of The Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS) and the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asia Schools (IASAS), where the High School Athletic Program competes at the varsity level.

An Avenue for Creativity

Creativity is central to a student’s development, and ISKL offers a wide range of opportunities embedded within its curriculum and co-curricular activities. Students’ self-expression and confidence are nurtured through talent shows, plays, musicals, choirs, youth orchestras, concerts, exhibitions, and more.Vayden shares this passion, having taken part in productions ranging from The Great Gatsby to Mamma Mia!, noting that these creative outlets allow students to hone their talents and creatively express themselves on stage.

Learning Through Service

Service learning is at the heart of the curriculum, transforming students into global learners with enduring values. Through a wide array of activities, students are empowered to make meaningful contributions to their communities, engaging in solution planning and action. For Zhi Hong (’26), these experiences are foundational: “My experience during the Global Action Program (GAP) last year was especially memorable. I had so much fun hanging out with my friends, and it was truly enjoyable to see the bond and have fun. At the same time, we made a meaningful change in the lives of the locals by building a biogas reactor for them, which was certainly a cherry on top.” It is through these journeys that students discover that the greatest memories are often the ones made while helping others.
