School Open Days 2020

The beginning of a new year is the ideal time for relocating parents, employers sending staff on international assignments and relocation professionals to consider school choices ahead of the new school academic year.

With most schools around the world holding open days and school tours ahead of the new academic year in August/September, now is the perfect time to discuss the options available to relocating families and to start applying to prospective schools – even if the moving date has not yet been confirmed. Open days are a chance for prospective parents to get a feel for the ethos and atmosphere of a school. Parents will usually be taken on a guided tour – often by the pupils themselves or the head of school – to see its facilities, meet staff and students, and learn about their successes. Bear in mind that on an open day the school will be striving to present its best self. If you want to see the how the school runs on a 'normal' day, then it is worth finding out if you can book a private tour on a separate date to see how the school operates and view lessons in progress.

An opportunity to ask questions

Open days allow parents and children to consider their requirements (what sort of education do they want for their child?; are there sports programmes?; how does the school challenge gifted children or support children with SEN?) and ask questions about the admissions procedure, curriculum, pastoral care and extra-curricular activities etc. The guided tour will cover the basics of the school and what it offers, but don't be afraid to be proactive with questions for staff and pupils. Often, pupils are the best way to find out about school life and their experiences at the school.TASIS-education-webinar-in-text-banner-playbackRelocating families may have concerns about moving to a new country and an open day can be a chance to see how other expats have settled into life in a new environment and learning institution. An open day is also a chance to ask questions about how the school will help children thrive in a this new environment and support their learning journey. Many international schools have a dedicated admissions team, who are experienced in dealing with relocating families and should be able to guide you smoothly through the admissions process, which can differ greatly from country to country. They should also be able to put you in touch with other families who have been in a similar situation.
