Visible Wellbeing, Visible Growth at Rugby School Japan

Our “Whole Person Whole Point” ethos goes beyond academic rigour, focusing equally on our pupils’ happiness and emotional development. Last month’s Wellbeing Day - an off-timetable day designed to support our pupils’ personal and emotional growth - was just a reminder of this. Read Principal Tony Darby’s reflection on why embedding wellbeing into our school culture is the most tangible way we prepare students to truly flourish.

Visible Wellbeing, Visible Growth

Last month, Rugby School Japan came together for our annual Wellbeing Day, an event designed to encourage everyone to pause, reflect, and place wellbeing at the very heart of our community. While it was a day filled with purposeful activities, its deeper significance lies in what it represents: that at RSJ, wellbeing is not a buzzword, but a cornerstone of our educational philosophy.

Wellbeing at the Heart of Education

Our approach is inspired by Professor Lea Waters’ Visible Wellbeing framework, which gives schools a practical and holistic way to nurture wellbeing among both pupils and staff. With its six key domains – strengths, emotional management, attention and awareness, relationships, coping, and habits and goals – this model encourages us to think beyond academic outcomes, to ask instead: are our pupils truly flourishing? This question resonates powerfully with our ethos of Whole Person, Whole Point. Education, as we see it, is not merely about the accumulation of knowledge. It is about shaping lives, nurturing character, developing confidence, and ensuring that every young person leaves RSJ with a deep sense of who they are and how they might contribute to the world. Wellbeing is central to this mission.

A Day to Reflect and Recharge

Our Wellbeing Day reflected this vision beautifully. Throughout the day, pupils and staff took part in a variety of sessions designed to encourage reflection, creativity, and balance. From art therapy and meditation to wellbeing classes and physical exercise, activities took place across the entire campus, inviting everyone to step outside their usual routines and engage in something restorative. It was inspiring to see pupils and teachers learning side by side, each exploring new ways to connect, recharge, and support their own wellbeing and that of others.

Flourishing Together

For our staff too, wellbeing is a shared journey. By engaging with the framework, teachers and mentors are equipped to design learning environments that are not only academically challenging but also emotionally supportive. When staff themselves feel empowered and connected, the benefits ripple outwards to every pupil in their care.Wellbeing Day, then, is more than just a date in the calendar. It is a reminder of our ongoing commitment to creating a school culture where every individual feels safe, supported, and seen. By intentionally embedding wellbeing into the life of RSJ, we aim to ensure that pupils and staff alike can flourish, not only within the walls of our school, but in the wider world beyond. My thanks to all members of staff who helped plan and lead the day and to every pupil who embraced it so openly and wholeheartedly. Together, you embody the spirit of wellbeing that lies at the heart of Rugby School Japan.
